WASHINGTON — WASHINGTON, April 29 /PRNewswire/ — Mel V. Velarde, the President & CEO of Next Mobile, Inc. in the Philippines, will deliver the keynote address on July 11 at WCA 2003 in Washington DC about his company’s nationwide rollout of wireless broadband services beginning this summer, the Wireless Communications Association (WCA) announced today. WCA 2003, the wireless broadband industry’s premier annual show, is run by the industry’s trade association WCA from July 8 to 11 in the new Washington Convention Center.
The top executive of Next Mobile (formerly Nextel Communications Philippines, Inc.) holds the same titles concurrently of iMAX Communications, Inc., an Internet Service Provider. Earlier this month, iMAX and NextNet Wireless, the industry’s most widely deployed provider of non line-of-sight (NLOS) broadband wireless access systems, announced their contract to deliver NLOS broadband wireless services in the Philippines using NextNet’s Expedience(TM) system. “We teamed up with NextNet because their OFDM-based NLOS system is the right platform for a mobile data play,” said Velarde, one of his country’s top media, telecom and IT leaders after establishing the major cable TV company Sky Cable. “NextNet is uniquely situated to help us reach our objective of delivering future 4G mobile voice, video and data services.” iMAX will begin broadband wireless service this summer, targeting 5 million of the 12 million business and residential subscribers in metropolitan Manila — one of the most densely populated cities in the world. Next Mobile will provide the required infrastructure and key personnel to implement and manage the iMAX network build out. iMAX plans to partner with local ISPs to expand broadband wireless service to cover 77 million Filipinos nationwide, or 98% of the population of the Philippines.
